The island with an area of 641 square miles, is divided into municipalities, namely, Antigua, Puerto del Rosario, Betancuria, Pajara, La Oliva, and Tuineje. 100 of the original settlements were distributed through these municipalities.

Fuerteventura can be reached through Fuerteventura Airport located at El Matorral. It has a range of well-developed tourist facilities, including the first hotel ever built on the island in 1965. Some of the beautiful sights popular to tourists are the fine sand dunes of Corralejo and El Jable, the remote and imposing house called Villa Winter at Cofete, and museums and exhibitions like the Antigua Windmill Craft Centre, the Atalayuta Archaeological Interpretation Centre, and the Salt Museum.
